Sofia, Bulgaria

Around a quarter of Bulgaria’s total population of 8 million live in Sofia, the capital city and the country’s main economic, commercial and cultural centre.

The city has a proud history stretching back 8,000 years. Even today, ancient excavations compete for space with modern skyscrapers and classic art nouveau architecture.

Sofia is a very cultural city with music, theatre and art all taking pride of place in the city’s impressive theatres, concert halls and galleries.

The St Alexander Nevski Church is Sofia’s best know landmark. It was built as a memorial to the Russians who were killed in the Russian – Turkish Wars (1877/8). It contains a collection of Bulgarian icons from medieval times onward.

Other historic buildings include the 6th Century St Sofia Basilica from which the city gets it’s name, the 4th century St George Rotunda, the 16th century Banya-Bashi Mosque and the 14th century St Petka Samardjiiska Church which was built below street level.
